With heavy hearts, we celebrate the life of James Robert “June” Young, who peacefully transitioned from this life on September 21, 2025, at the age of 87.
James was born and raised in Camden, New Jersey, on March 23, 1938, to James A. Young and Sarah Searles-Young. He attended the Camden City School District before proudly enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1957.
During his distinguished service, he fought bravely in the Vietnam War, rising to the rank of Sergeant and earning the Purple Heart for his courage and sacrifice. James retired from the Marines in 1969, returning home to continue building a life rooted in strength, discipline, and love for his family.
On September 12, 1959, James married the love of his life, Iluminada Candelario. Together they raised five children: Robert (deceased), Daphne, Mark, James (deceased), Shanda. James was a proud father who poured his heart into guiding his children. His pride later overflowed for his grandchildren — Khalil, Aaliyah, James (Taniya) — his great-grandchildren Me’Khi, Cah’Li, and Jayla, who brought him immeasurable joy.
James is survived by his devoted sisters Lenore (Carlos) and Sandra, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Iluminada; parents James and Sarah; sons Robert, James Jr.; siblings Ronald, Benjamin, Rudolph, Loretta, Dorothy, Rosetta, Roxanne.
Lovingly known as “June,” he was the kind of man who welcomed everyone with open arms and treated friends like family. His wisdom, humor, and unconditional love filled every room. His generous spirit reminded us all of what it means to truly care for others. Known for his love of music and skill at the pool table — a true “pool shark” — James carried a presence that was both strong and comforting. He was a protector, a provider, and the heart of our family. His legacy is one of love, resilience, and unity, with lessons that will live on for generations.
Though we will miss him dearly, we find peace knowing that James has been reunited with his beloved wife and family in eternal rest. His spirit will continue to guide us until we meet again. He will be laid to rest with full military honors in Puerto Rico, a fitting tribute to a life of courage, service, and love.
