Ray Vaughn Covington Jr Obituary

RayVaughn “Ray” Covington Jr. was born on November 15, 1976, in Camden, New Jersey to Eleanor Johnson and RayVaughn Covington Sr. He departed this life on December 15, 2025, in Pennsauken, New Jersey, leaving behind a legacy rooted in love, loyalty, and family.

Ray was educated in the Camden City Public School system and graduated from Camden High School in 1996. He later attended Montclair State University and earned his HVAC certification, building a career across various service fields. Known for his punctuality, reliability, and strong work ethic, Ray took pride in showing up and doing his work well—values that reflected who he was both professionally and personally.

A gifted athlete, Ray had a deep love for football and was an exceptionally talented quarterback. His abilities earned him a college football scholarship, a testament to his discipline, leadership, and determination. A devoted fan of the Raiders, football remained a lifelong passion and a source of joy and connection for him.

Ray’s devotion to fatherhood was evident from the very beginning. When his firstborn son, DeJaughn, entered his life, Ray stepped fully into responsibility—making sacrifices and learning a trade so he could work and provide for his child. Their relationship was layered and meaningful: father, confidant, protector, and friend—always grounded in the reminder, “I’m still your father.” That same intentional love carried through to Briah, his cherished daughter and true daddy’s little girl, and to Nori, his youngest, whom he adored deeply. Ray’s presence in his children’s lives was steady, hands-on, and unwavering. He loved them fiercely, showed up consistently, and modeled what it meant to lead with love, responsibility, and sacrifice. His legacy as a father lives on through them.

Above all else, Ray loved his family. As the oldest grandchild, he naturally assumed the role of protector—dependable, present, and generous. He was intentional about staying connected, consistently showing up for those he loved, and leading by example for his younger cousins. His life reflected devotion to family, and those who knew him best would describe him as the very definition of a family man.

RayVaughn leaves to cherish his memory his children, DeJaughn Mitchell, Briah Covington, and Nori Elliot; granddaughter, Aubree Mitchell; parents, Eleanor Nadine Johnson and RayVaughn Covington Sr.; stepfather, Darren Bailey; brother, Christian Covington; step-brother, Da’nen Williams; sisters, Deborah (Raphael) Gatling, Nakia (Anna) Gilmore, and Raycia Covington; and grandmother, Kathryn Murphy. He is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a few special friends whose lives were touched by his presence.

Though his life was far too short, RayVaughn’s impact will endure through the love he gave, the family he protected, and the example he set. His legacy lives on in those who knew him and loved him.
