Her smile was a warm embrace that reflected her energetic, heartfelt love within. Her spirit was continuously filled with a high praise. A loving mother & grandmother. A devoted pillar of her family. A loyal friend. A compassionate educator. Daughter of the Most High. How grateful we are that God lent her to us.
Maggie Sue Miller was born surrounded by love, to the late Helen Miller, on January 10, 1962, in Philadelphia, PA. Her childhood days were spent with her siblings Vera, Larry, Lisa, Tamera and the late Christina, Michael and Thomas, all of whom she cherished dearly. Upon her graduation from West Philadelphia High School, Maggie enrolled in West Virginia State University. Her heart yearned to be closer to home, so she relocated to Camden, NJ, shortly after, welcoming her firstborn son, Antoine.
Soon after, Maggie accepted her first educator position at MLK Daycare Center. Her nurturing nature made her irresistible to the countless number of families she served, many of whom happily hugged and thanked her throughout her life, for the powerful impact she had upon them. Still, Maggie had more love to share and extended her heart, beyond expectation, to her neighborhood.
An atmosphere of tender loving care, Maggie’s home was a cozy haven for the neighboring children. She stood in the gaps and showered them with motherly love, empowering and supporting them, imprinting a foundational resilience. She believed that caregiving was a collective collaboration and her kindness was rooted in care. Maggie was the literal personification of the African proverb: “It takes a village.”
Maggie was blessed with the arrival of her youngest son, D’Andre. She fulfilled motherhood with strength, sacrifice and an unconditional selfless love. She took great joy in raising her nephew Brandon as her own and spent many joyous hours creating fond family memories. A perfect balance of fierce protection and influential guidance, Maggie taught her sons to be fearless in all they pursued. The very thought of Brandon, Antoine & D’Andre brought happy tears to her eyes.
Upon her acceptance of employment with the Camden City School District, Maggie demonstrated her unwavering commitment to excellence and enrolled in Rowan University. She met feat with faith as she pressed through her studies, completing both her bachelor’s and later, her master’s degree in special education. After 26 dedicated years, Maggie retired her teaching badge, but not her passion, as she continued to serve as a mentor and volunteer.
Maggie cherished her many meaningful relationships. She enjoyed going out for breakfast and hosting themed parties with her closest friends. She loved to entertain and you knew you were in for a good time as she was the life of the party! She had a distinct way of uplifting those around her, even on the phone! Conversations turned into praise breaks as Maggie was obedient to the Spirit. If she was led to sing, she sang. If she was led to pray, she prayed. Many of us were comforted as she confirmed God’s love. She couldn’t keep her praise on the inside!
As much as Maggie delighted in raising her children, her heart found an even deeper, sweeter kind of love for her grandchildren. Affectionately named “Mom Mom”, Josiah, Charli, Jayden & Dylan were her pride & joy. She was eager to offer a helping hand without hesitation and thankful for every precious moment spent together. She was blessed to see her legacy woven into her family.
Although she maintained a close connection to many, Maggie treasured her bond with her oldest nephew Vernon. Following their distinguished greeting, “Holla!,” the two would spend hours talking, debating, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Two proud Capricorns, their love was abundantly evident.
To have known her was to love her. We rest confidently knowing her saved soul entered heaven as she placed her hand into God’s and accepted her place amongst the heavenly angels. She leaves to cherish her memory, sons Antoine & D’Andre; bonus daughters Shayla & Jessyca; grandchildren Josiah, Charli, Jayden & Dylan; sisters Vera, Lisa, Tamara; brother Larry; Aunt Gerd; Cousins Brandi, Kelly, Sharon, Carmen; and a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins and friends.
