Evelyn Chapman Obituary
Evelyn Chapman was born on October 18, 1944, in Burlington, New Jersey, a cherished blessing to her parents, Mary Elizabeth Moses and Richard Johnson, both now deceased. Raised in Burlington and educated in the Burlington City School System, she formed lifelong bonds that shaped the compassionate, resilient woman she became. Among those treasured relationships was her childhood friend, Vera Mae Mumford (deceased), whose friendship remained a constant throughout their lives. Evelyn also shared a deep and loving connection with her sistersinlaws, Linda Ellis’El and the late Kay Turner.
As a young girl, Evelyn was a member of St. Mary’s United Methodist Church in Burlington, where she joyfully sang in the youth choir.
In 1962, she married the love of her life, Markham Garfield Chapman, in Burlington, New Jersey. Together they built a beautiful life and raised three children:
• Markham G. Chapman Jr. of Houston, TX (wife Edena)
• Sharon D. Chapman of San Antonio, TX
• Kim Y. Chapman of San Antonio, TX
Evelyn was part of a large, loving family of 18 siblings. She is preceded in death by Meryl Moses, Frances Howard, Janice McCleary (husband Brian), Kenneth Howard, and Bobby Johnson. She is survived by:

• Robert Howard – Sicklerville, NJ
• Matthew Johnson (wife Irus) – Philadelphia, PA
• Charles Mae Johnson – Woodbridge, VAHenry Johnson – Philadelphia, PA
• Laura Johnson – Philadelphia, PA
• Richard Johnson – Atlanta, GA
She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren—Desiree, Ciara, Mark III, Sean, Keaira(Kevin), Ceaira, Vince (Tamara), and Adrian—along with greatgranddaughters Bella, Peja, Amari, and Kobi, and greatgrandson Royce. Countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family held her close in their hearts.
Evelyn lived a life marked by generosity, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family. She worked in retail at Caldor and later held positions with America’s Best and JCI clearing house, excelling in various accounting roles. She was a dedicated Avon representative, known for her warm smile, polished presentation, and loyal customers. Her family lovingly remembers her as the “coupon queen,” a master at stretching a dollar and managing a household with skill and grace.
Her creativity flourished through her love of decorating and crafting, filling her home with warmth, beauty, and personal touches. Above all, Evelyn was a devoted homemaker whose greatest joy was nurturing her children and grandchildren, instilling in them the values they carry today.
Her home was a place of refuge—open to family, friends, and anyone in need. She offered comfort, guidance, and love without hesitation. Evelyn’s legacy is one of compassion, strength, and boundless generosity.
She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
