Mabel Shannon Brown was born on September 26, 1919, in Camden, NJ to Ethel and Garfield Shannon. She was educated in Camden, NJ, Mt. Vernon, NY and Elizabeth, NC School Systems. Mabel was married to Robert Burley and from that union they had four children Doris, Robert Jr., Wilbert and Betty. May 8, 1948, Mabel join in holy matrimony with the late Richard Brown. Mabel’s work history included being a Welder in New York and a Machine Operator at Campbell Soup Co. in Camden, NJ. Her true calling came when she attended and graduated from nursing school becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. Mabel’s nursing career spanned over 50 years. Mabel was a dedicated and long-time member of Saint Joseph’s Pro Cathedral. Mabel’s community and church involvement included: mentorship of the St. Joseph Pro’s (a senior citizen group), PEPS, The Legion of Mary, St. Joseph’s Gospel Choir, and she assisted with the Bingo Program. Mabel was also an Eucharistic Minister who ministered, visited and administered communion for those shut-in. Mabel loved to go to the casino, bake, knit, crochet and sing. Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., were two of her favorite entertainers. Mabel passed away quietly on Monday, April 3, 2017. She was preceded in death by husband, Richard Brown; sons, Robert Burley, Jr. and Wilbert Burley; grandson, Joseph Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Anthony Mitchell and Janyll Burley. Mabel leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Doris Monroe and Betty Mitchell; brother, Ralph (Audrey) Shannon; grandchildren, Veronica (Ralph) Hilton, Gregory Tarrence, Anthony Burley, Jacinta Mitchell (Kevin), Jerome Mitchell, Dana Burley and Lavonna Stanley and twelve great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Mabel had a special bond with great–granddaughters, Letrice and Tonee and great-great granddaughter, London. She is also survived by her special friend Jacque, daughter-in-law Dorothy Burley and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lovingly Submitted, The Family
