Obituary of Kevin Wharton Sr

Kevin Michael Wharton Sr. was born in Camden, New Jersey on May 8, 1961, to the late Phyllis Ann Wharton and William ‘Buddy’ Saunders. Kevin was educated in the Camden City School System and graduated from Camden High School in 1979. He went on to earn an Engineering degree from Rutgers University. After college Kevin accepted employment with Murray Financial working his way up to Vice President of the company. With much ambition he became his own boss starting ‘GW Construction’ renovating and remodeling homes and building decks. With that entrepreneurial drive Kevin also had his own tax preparation business and provided financial advice. Kevin was a man of unwavering integrity, kindness, and compassion. Kev, or ‘Kavar’, as he was affectionately known cherished family and friends. He looked forward to family reunions, class reunions, spending time with the fellows. He was always able to cook or barbeque on the grill while listening to his favorite jazz or hip-hop music. Kevin also enjoyed playing pool with his friends. In the past year he found great joy in driving his Mercedes Benz. Kevin, with remarkable spirit and generosity, was a pillar of strength in the community and a friend to all. No one was closer to his heart than his sons Kevin Jr., and Kenneth, and his bonus son Stephen. His sons were the blessed offspring of Kevin and his beloved Shelly Carter who proceeded him in death. Kevin accepted Christ at an early age. As a child, he attended New Wesley AME Zion church where he was baptized by Reverend Drew. Kevin later attended Bethany Baptist Church where he became instrumental in starting up the Mortgage Program. On September 7, 2023, God sent his angels and Kevin transitioned to his heavenly home. He was preceded in death by his brother Darryl Wharton. Kevin leaves to cherish his memory sons Kevin Wharton Jr., Kenneth Wharton, Stephen Carter, his grandchildren, brothers Steven Lightfoot (Shirley), Dwayne Wharton, Keith Wharton (Brenda), Dwight Wharton (Safa), one sister Kelly Wharton-Davis (Lamont), brother and sister in- law Tyrone and Kim Sinclair, aunts Bernadette, Janet, Carolyn, Amanda and Helen Wharton, Uncle James Wharton Sr. (Lucille), nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, godchildren, cousins and devoted friends.
