Obituary:
Laverne Pitts, age 61 years of Pennsauken, NJ, passed away on January 12, 2025.
Laverne was born November 3, 1963 in Camden, NJ to the late Carrie and Leonard Carter. She later would relocate to Pennsauken, NJ where she resided until her passing. At a young age she was given the nickname of Peanut which is what family and friends would grow to call her for the rest of her life.
Laverne grew up in the Parkside section of Camden and graduated from Camden High School class of 1982. While attending Camden High School, Laverne was known for being a member of the color guard and a social butterfly. Her classmates remember her infectious smile, good advice, and wittiness. When she wasn’t busy with the color guard, you could find her enjoying her favorite pastime of skating. Peanut would be seen skating backwards in the skates she owned that adorned her favorite pom-poms to which she loved dearly.
Following in her mother Carrie and close friend Pansy’s footsteps she became an employee for the State of NJ Dept of Labor in 1988. Laverne loved to work and her coworkers would brag about how knowledgeable and passionate she was about her work. They would also say that although she would joke and trash talk, she took no mess and could be the voice of many. Laverne worked for the state for over 30 years and remained employed there as an Unemployment Insurance Technician 2 until her last days.
Laverne married her late husband Charles Pitts on May 29th, 1990 in Maryland. They went on to build their beautiful family until she became a widow in May of 2004.
Peanut was exceptional with numbers and that helped in her favorite pastime of shopping. If you knew Laverne then you know how much she loved shopping and getting deals. Being good with numbers allowed her to do discount percentages in her head. When Laverne wasn’t
shopping, you could find her at a cheer competition cheering for her granddaughters, traveling, or home watching football. She was a diehard 49ers fan and although she would never watch her team play due to her superstitions, she would still be heard saying that they were going to beat whoever they were playing.
Peanut was the glue that kept her family together. She opened her doors to everyone from the friends of her children to the friends of her grandchildren. Her home was always a safe hangout spot for everyone. Peanut was charismatic, giving, and loving to everyone she came across.
She is survived by her children Lynice, Lachelle, Rasha and Sh’Kai, two brothers Robert and Clarence, nieces and nephews Tamika (Shane), Tiffany (Anthony), Robert (Celestina), Rashon, Turquoise, Turquan and Tureck and a host of great nieces, nephews, family and friends. Laverne also had the privilege of being a godmother to Imani, Jaylen, and Tyrae.
She was predeceased by her parents Carrie and Leonard, sister Patricia, and her husband Charles.
If you knew Laverne, then you knew that the ultimate apples of her eyes were her grandchildren. MomMom will continue to live on through Aleyah, Ja’Corie, Ja’Niyah, Jorydnn, Ajourni, Xaiyah, Xouri, Kalina, Shane Jr and and the Oaklyn Baptist Church, staff at Virtua Voorhees and Our Lady of Lourdes, and all of her family, friends, and colleagues that have been supportive and caring.
